Associate of General Studies


The Associate of General Studies Degree is a two-year program that allows students a wide choice of subjects. Students must meet certain basic requirements, but they are free to select other courses for career preparation, self-improvement, or cultural enrichment. Students may choose an area of concentration in the liberal arts, the sciences, business, or even certain technical fields. The degree may serve as a terminal degree program for those students who wish to fulfill cultural or vocational objectives in two years of general college work. It may also serve as a foundation for further study for those students who later desire to pursue a baccalaureate degree.

The general studies curriculum allows the student a wide choice of subjects. With the aid of a faculty advisor, students may construct a program in accordance with their own objectives, so long as they meet the requirements listed below.

Associate of General Studies Requirements

To obtain an Associate of General Studies Degree a student must satisfy the following requirements:

  1. A minimum of six semester hours of General Education English composition, including ENGL 1002 .
  2. A minimum of six semester hours of General Education math beginning at a level no lower than college algebra. Examples of acceptable sequences are: 1015-1018; 1015-1425; 1015-1431; 1017-1018; 1021-1022; 1021-1425; 1021-1431; or 1015 or 1021 and an additional Analytic Reasoning course.
  3. A minimum of six semester hours in a General Education biological science or six semester hours in a General Education physical science is required.
  4. A minimum of nine semester hours in the Humanities and Fine Arts to include three hours in General Education history and three hours in communications studies. The other three semester hours may come from General Education Arts, Music, or Theater.
  5. A minimum of 12 semester hours (6 hours must be General Education, from which at least 3 hours must be at or above the sophomore level) in the Social Sciences is required which may include courses in Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. Additionally, select courses in Education or Health and Physical Recreation Education may also satisfy this requirement. The following EDCI and HPRE courses can be used to satisfy the Social Science requirement: EDCI 1000 , EDCI 2020 EDCI 2025 EDCI 2027 EDCI 2028 EDCI 2052 EDCI 2058 EDCI 2700 , and HPRE 1600 .
  6. A minimum of 12 hours must be earned in an area of concentration which may be multidisciplinary (no more than 24 hours in one subject will be counted for degree credit).
  7. The remaining hours (a maximum of nine semester hours) are electives and may be taken from the discipline areas listed below:
    1. Humanities/Fine Arts: Art, Communication Studies, English, Foreign Language, History, Mass Communication, Music, Philosophy, Theater
    2. Social Sciences: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology
    3. Natural Sciences/Mathematics: Agronomy, Animal Science, Agriculture, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Dairy Science, Environmental Studies, Horticulture, Mathematics, Microbiology, Nutrition, Physical Science, Physics, Poultry Science, Zoology

In addition to the above discipline areas, students may take elective courses in business, criminal justice, nursing, fire science, education, agriculture, etc.

  1. The student must also meet the general degree requirements for all associate degree programs as listed in the LSU Eunice Catalog.
  2. A total of 60 hours is required for the degree.
