The Division of Health Sciences, Business & Technology, and Public Protection and Safety is committed to excellence in education and the development of a stimulating learning environment to prepare students in healthcare and business technology for successfully attaining their educational, career, and personal goals.
Nursing Philosophy
Faculty believes that nursing is a caring discipline whose members possess integrity and strive for excellence. Nursing is a unique body of knowledge that combines concepts from biological, behavioral, and social sciences. The goal of nursing is to provide holistic patient-centered care that is sensitive to the preferences, values, and needs of culturally diverse patient populations and their families. This care requires teamwork and collaboration. The nurse uses the concepts of communication, evidence-based practice, professionalism, ethics, and safety in the delivery of care in settings throughout the community. Faculty value the unique and common contributions provided by each educational program within the nursing profession and support academic progression.
Nursing Program Graduate Outcomes
The graduate should be able to:
1. Integrate principles from the natural and behavioral sciences with nursing to meet the needs of individuals across the lifespan.
2. Provide competent care to individuals across the lifespan by utilizing the nursing process and clinical judgement processes/skills.
3. Communicate effectively to provide care or promote health to individuals across the lifespan.
4. Manage the care of individuals in collaboration with members of the health care team.
Nursing courses facilitate the student toward the accomplishment of the Graduate Outcomes. Course objectives define the knowledge and skills the student must demonstrate. Unit objectives, both theory and clinical, contribute to the achievement of the outcomes.
Requirements for Admission to the ASN Program
Admission to the ASN Degree Program is on a selective basis. Selection recommendations are made by the Division of Health Sciences, Business & Technology, and Public Protection and Safety Selection Committee to the Dean. Selection into the Nursing Program
The Division of Health Sciences, Business & Technology, and Public Protection and Safety will admit classes in the ASN Degree Program in the Fall and Spring semester of each year. Selection decisions will normally be made and communicated to students by the first week in June for fall admission and last week of October for spring admission. Students not selected during the Selection Process and who seek admission in a subsequent class must resubmit the entire application and will remain subject to the eligibility requirements specified. A maximum of three application attempts to the ASN program is allowed. Career counseling is available to students through the Office of Career Services. Students applying for selection will be required to complete the prerequisite courses listed below:
|
Criteria for Selection
Fall applicants may complete prerequisites in the Spring prior to admission, while Spring applicants must finish prerequisites by the end of the Summer to be considered for that cycle.
The following criteria are used in calculating the applicant’s ranking for selection:
1. Completion of 25 hours of required courses with a grade-point average of 2.5 or higher.
2. Entrance exam score.
3. Cumulative (overall and LSUE) academic record and prerequisite GPA.
4. Previously earned relevant degree.
5. Louisiana residents will be given priority in selection
At the time of application to the Nursing program, the student is required to fulfill the following:
- Complete the background check and fingerprinting process through Identogo, following the instructions provided by LSBN or on the LSBN website.
Note: If LSBN is unable to clear selected applicants for a clinical student license, you will not be able to start the cohort for which you were selected. In that case, you will need to go through the selection process again once the background issue is resolved.
- Submit all documents requested by the LSU Eunice Nursing program and the LSBN by the published deadlines. Failure to submit requested documents by due dates and comply with above requirements invalidate the student’s application and will prohibit selection into the ASN program.
Upon selection into the Nursing Program the student is required to fulfill the following:
- Complete electronic forms and submit fees for additional background investigations required by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing (LSBN) and health care facilities.
- Submit to a urine drug screen and receive a report of negative. See Nursing Student Handbook for policy specifics.
- Students admitted to the nursing program must submit a completed Nursing Program Health Form within six weeks prior to the beginning of the semester of entry. These forms and requirements are to be submitted electronically as designated. All physicals must occur after selection.
- Submit all documents requested by the LSU Eunice Nursing program and the LSBN by the published deadlines. Failure to submit requested documents by due dates will prohibit continuance in the program.
- Once selected and notified, the Program Director for Nursing must be notified of the applicant’s commitment to accept or reject selection into the ASN program.
- Upon acceptance by the applicant to enter the LSU Eunice Associate of Science in Nursing degree program, the student accepts and agrees to abide by all published University, Division, and program policies regarding student conduct and academic standing.
Health information, background checks, initial drug screens, and random drug screens will be managed by the student through a secure online information management service for a fee which will be paid by the student. All health-related information, immunization records, TB testing report, and lab data must be recorded on official medical provider/company stationary. Data submitted in any other format will be rejected.
Students entering nursing are advised that the Louisiana State Board of Nursing (LSBN) requires persons who have been arrested, charged with, convicted of, pled guilty or no contest to, or been sentenced for any criminal offense in any state to petition the Board in writing for the right to practice as a student of nursing in Louisiana prior to enrolling in the first clinical nursing course. The LSBN will conduct a criminal background record check with digital fingerprints on all students applying to the nursing program.
The criminal background check will be conducted by Identogo. There are additional background investigations required by some of the clinical agencies not covered by the LSBN criminal history background investigation.
The data required by various health care agencies not covered in the LSBN background check include, but not limited to:
1) Social Security number verification, 2) employment verification to include the reason for separation and eligibility for reemployment for each employer, 3) Violent Sexual Offender and Predator Registry Search, 4) Health and Human Services (HHS) / Office of Inspector General (OIG) list of excluded individuals or entities, 5) General Services Administration (GSA) list of parties excluded from federal programs, and 6) U.S. Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) list of Specially Designated Nationals (SDN). A separate agency is contracted with LSU Eunice to perform the additional background checks required by health care affiliates. This background check is completed at the student’s expense.

Retention/Progression Guidelines
Acceptance into the LSU Eunice Nursing program entitles the student to progress through the nursing curriculum with the class to which the student is admitted. In order to be retained and progress in the clinical nursing sequence, a student must:
- Maintain an LSU and an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher.
- Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher in all required nursing courses.
- Complete all nursing courses with a grade of “C” or better. The grading scale for all nursing courses is: “A”-93-100; “B”-85-92; “C”-77-84; “D”-65-76; “F”-failure, below 65.
- Repeat any nursing course in which a grade of “D”, “F”, or “W” is earned. A student is permitted one “D”, “F”, “NC”, or “W” once admitted to any clinical nursing sequence. A second “D”, “F”, “NC”, and/or “W” in any nursing semester, whether at LSUE or another institution, constitutes cause for dismissal from the program.
- Maintain current CPR certification (CPR for Health Care Providers) and annual TB testing.
- Maintain health/immunization requirements.
Students may not withdraw from a clinical course for which they have earned an F, regardless of when in the semester the F is earned. Neither, in such a case, may students withdraw from either of the two co-requisite courses.
Failure to successfully complete any nursing course (excluding NURS1000 ), for either academic or other reasons, will require that the student apply for readmission to the Nursing program if the student wishes to continue in the program. A student repeating a nursing course must concurrently re-enroll in the co-requisite nursing courses. Re-enrolling in a co-requisite course in which the student had previously received a passing grade will not be counted as repeated nursing course hours for the dismissal policy. The most recent grade earned will be the grade for the course. The purpose for requiring re-enrollment in co-requisite courses is to assure that nursing students receive the most current health care information.
Health Science Divisional Policy
Admission into any selective LSUE Health Science program (Nursing, Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Care, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Surgical Technology) will be limited to two (2) admissions into any program in which the student has started the program but has unsuccessfully completed the program. This restriction applies to whether the student has voluntarily withdrawn from a program or has not met the required objectives necessary for program progression. This policy applies to students who have attempted the same program twice or who have attempted two different programs. This policy does not apply to students who have declined admission into a selective program after selection but before entering programmatic courses. Students wishing to apply for selection for a third entry and attempt in any selective LSUE Health Science program must wait a minimum of 5 years to reapply.
Students dismissed from any selective LSUE Health Science program for violations to the LSUE Student Code of Conduct or violations to any Program Policy(s) may not be allowed to reapply for selection into any selective LSUE Health Science program. A written request for appeal may be submitted to the Dean of Health Sciences, Business & Technology, and Public Protection and Safety for special consideration.
Transfer and re-entry students seeking selection into Health Science programs will have their transcripts evaluated for approved credit. The following guidelines will be applied to transfer and re-entry credits for students seeking entry into one of the competitive Health Science programs:
Math, Natural Science, and Medical Terminology courses must be less than 7 years of age at the time of re-entry or transfer.
Courses other than Math, Natural Science, and Medical Terminology must be less than 10 years of age at the time of re-entry or transfer or have approval from the Dean of Health Sciences, Business & Technology, and Public Protection and Safety
Requirements for Readmission
A student whose enrollment is interrupted, either voluntarily or by compulsion, or who fails to earn a grade of “C” in a required nursing course may be considered for readmission to the Nursing Program provided that the student is in good academic standing as defined in the “University Regulations ” section of the LSU Eunice catalog. However, in no circumstances will a student be considered for readmission when the student has earned more than one “D”, “F”, or “W” in a required nursing course. A student may only be readmitted to the nursing course in which they received the failing grade. A student may be readmitted to the first semester of nursing courses after a period of five (5) years. Science and Math courses for nursing, if seven (7) years or older, must be repeated prior to reapplication.
A person wishing to be readmitted to nursing must: (a) have been a current nursing student within one year from the request to re-enter, (b) submit a re-entry form to the Director of Nursing or designee within 10 days of final grades for the semester prior to the semester requesting to return to, and (c) provide evidence of remaining current with skills, knowledge, and abilities from previous semesters. Readmission is not an automatic process and is dependent upon resource availability and other considerations for requirements.
Transfer Nursing Students
Students who wish to transfer with nursing credits are subject to the “Requirements for Readmission”, “Louisiana State Board of Nursing’s Criteria for Enrollment in a Clinical Nursing Course”, “and “Retention/Progression Guidelines” specified above. Nursing credits will be evaluated on an individual basis.
Students requesting a transfer into the Nursing Program must:

- Provide a transcript of all previous college work at the time of the interview.
- Submit a course description and course content from completed nursing courses at the time of the interview.
