Fee Exemptions

In addition to the fee exemptions listed under “Fee Exemption Awards and Other Scholarship Programs,” LSU Eunice offers the fee exemptions listed below. To receive an exemption, students must provide appropriate documentation of their qualifying status. Student Aid

LSU Eunice administers a broad program of financial aid and employment to help students who need assistance in financing their education. The Office of Financial Aid administers and coordinates loans, grants, and student employment. Additional information may be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid or from www.lsue.edu/financialaid. Students who are enrolled simultaneously at LSU Eunice and at another institution can normally receive financial aid from only one of those institutions unless a consortium agreement has been established.

LSU Eunice uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) to determine a student’s eligibility for all federal aid programs. Once the Office of Financial Aid receives the electronic financial aid file from FASFA, the student will be notified which supporting documents must be submitted before eligibility for aid can be determined. To be eligible for financial aid, a student must be in good standing and making satisfactory progress. Students who drop courses, resulting in a lower tuition rate, or who resign from LSU Eunice officially or unofficially may have to return a portion of the award.

Hardship Waiver

LSU Eunice, along with other state colleges and universities, was authorized by the Louisiana Legislature to raise tuition to offset the rising costs of post-secondary education. As directed by the Legislature, LSU Eunice will consider appeals for waiver of payment of the fee increase for the student who meets the following criteria:

  1. is a Louisiana resident;
  2. is a full-time student (12 or more hours);
  3. has applied for, and be deemed eligible to receive, federal financial aid (i.e., grants, loans, etc.);
  4. whose total cost of tuition, fees, books, and supplies exceeds the total amount received in grants, student loans, scholarships and other types of financial assistance (i.e., VA, Acadiana Works, etc.);
  5. whose waiver is not used in connection with other scholarships that exempt the same fees; and
  6. is also maintaining satisfactory progress based on LSU Eunice scholastic regulations.

You may apply for the waiver if you meet all of the above criteria and have special circumstances. Special Circumstances are defined as extreme condition(s) which exist that may warrant re-evaluation of a student’s financial aid file that may allow for the awarding of more aid. The circumstances must be different from what has already been reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Applications for waiver of tuition increase are available in the LSU Eunice Financial Aid Office. Please complete the fee waiver application and submit with supporting documentation to the Office of Financial Aid by August 23, 2018 for the fall semester, by January 16, 2019 for the spring semester, and by June 6, 2019 for the summer semester. No application can be accepted after the deadline. You are expected to make arrangements to pay your fees until your appeal can be considered. If the appeal is approved, your fee increase payment will be returned to you or your account will be credited.

Financial Aid Appeals Process

Students who do not meet the Standards of Academic Progress for Financial Aid can submit an appeal.  The appeal from can be found at www.lsue.edu/financialaid/finaidforms.  For additional information or to have questions answered, contact the Office of Enrolloment Management at (337) 550-1208 or visit room 117 in the Acadian Center on the LSU Eunice campus.

Grants

FEDERAL PELL GRANTS. These grants are available to qualified students enrolled in an approved post-secondary educational program. The amount of the award ranges up to approximately $5,920 per academic year.

FEDERAL SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY GRANTS. This grant is intended for the needy student. To be eligible for the FSEOG, the student must be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and must demonstrate an exceptional need.

VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION GRANTS. These grants are available to students who qualify because of physical disabilities which would ordinarily preclude the student from working. These grants are based on the individual needs of the student. Detailed information and application papers may be obtained from the Counselor, Vocational Rehabilitation, 825 Kaliste Saloom, Lafayette, Louisiana 70501, telephone (337) 262-5353.

Student Loans

LSU Eunice participates in several loan programs. Loans must be repaid according to terms of the note signed by the applicant. During the period that they are eligible to have their loan payments deferred, recipients of subsidized loans do not have to make payments on the loan principal and the interest is paid by the federal government. Unsubsidized loan recipients will have to make all interest payments themselves or have the interest capitalized. The Federal Direct Stafford Loan is available in both subsidized and unsubsidized forms. The Federal PLUS Loan is unsubsidized.

FEDERAL DIRECT STAFFORD LOANS. These low interest loans are made to students attending school at least half-time. Freshmen-level students may be eligible for a maximum of $3,500 per academic year. Sophomores may be eligible for a maximum of $4,500 per academic year. Repayment begins six months after leaving school or dropping below half-time enrollment. Students must complete an entrance interview when first receiving the Direct Stafford Loan and an exit interview when graduating, leaving LSU Eunice, or dropping below half-time. For students who are receiving a Federal Direct Stafford Loan for less than an academic year for a remaining period of enrollment and who will complete their training at LSU Eunice, the maximum amount for which they are eligible will be prorated according to federal guidelines.

UNSUBSIDIZED FEDERAL DIRECT STAFFORD LOANS. This loan carries the same low interest rate as the Federal Direct Stafford Loan. Repayment of the principal begins six months after leaving school or dropping below half-time. The interest must be paid while enrolled, or you may request that the interest be capitalized. Capitalization of interest is the addition of unpaid interest to the principal of your loan, thereby increasing your total debt and monthly interest payments. Students are eligible to borrow a maximum of $3,500 as a freshman and $4,500 as a sophomore. The Unsubsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loan is offered if you are not eligible or have partial eligibility for the Federal Direct Stafford Loan. The amount of the Federal Direct Stafford Loan and Unsubsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loan cannot exceed your maximum eligibility. Proration of the Unsubsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loan is also required for remaining periods of enrollment.

Dependent students may be eligible to borrow an additional $2,000 under the additional Unsubsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loan.

Independent students may be eligible to borrow an additional $6,000 under the additional Unsubsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loan.

FEDERAL DIRECT PLUS LOANS. Parents with good credit histories may borrow funds for a dependent child who is enrolled at least half-time. The yearly loan limit is the cost of education minus any estimated financial aid. Repayment begins 60 days after the final disbursement. There is no grace period for this loan. Applications for this loan may be obtained from the LSU Eunice Financial Aid Office.

Please contact the LSU Eunice Financial Aid Office if you have questions about any of these programs. Due to federal regulations, the Stafford and Additional Unsubsidized Federal Direct Stafford disbursements of loans to first-year undergraduate students who are first-time borrowers must be delayed until 30 days after the first day of classes.

REPAYMENT OF FUNDS. If, at a later date, a student is determined to be ineligible for funds awarded, he or she must repay the funds. In no case may students receive funds in excess of their cost of education. Aid recipients should keep in mind that changes in the number of credit hours they schedule may affect their eligibility for additional aid. Accepting funds through any aid program may affect eligibility for other aid programs. All loan applicants are required to participate in an entrance and exit meeting. The Director of Financial Aid is available to answer questions regarding eligibility and refund policies.

Regular Campus Employment

Students meeting necessary academic requirements may be appointed to various campus jobs. Although student need is considered, skill and previous work experience are also important considerations. Departmental heads are responsible for employment of students who are not eligible for aid.

Federal Work Study

LSU Eunice participates in the Federal Work-Study Program. Employment under the Federal Work-Study Program is based primarily upon need. Students are also assigned as reading/mathematics tutors in local schools under the America Reads/Math Challenge Program. For more information, contact the LSU Eunice Financial Aid Office.

Scholarships and Awards

LSU Eunice offers a variety of scholarships funded by private donors, businesses, and organizations. Some donors have established endowments to provide a permanent source of funding. Other scholarships are contributed by donors on an annual basis. Persons interested in LSU Eunice scholarships should apply by February 1 for scholarships that will begin the following fall semester. Applicants who apply after that date will be considered for any vacancies in scholarships that occur after scholarships have been awarded. To apply, complete an online scholarship application at http://eunice.lsue.edu:9040/cgi-bin/public/scholarapp.cgi. After reviewing the applications, the LSU Eunice Scholarship Committee awards the scholarships based on merit.

Scholarships do not require service and are given only to full-time students (with the exception of students in the nursing and other allied health programs). When an appointment is made for one year, it is usually for two consecutive semesters, beginning with the academic session in the fall. In most cases, receipients must maintain a cummulative GPA of 3.00 to continue receiving the scholarship. Typically, high school students applying for scholarships should have a minimum 3.00 GPA in “core” academic subjects and an ACT composite score of 20 or above. Scholarships provided by outside agencies are administered according to the rules and regulations prescribed by the donors, as accepted by the LSU Board of Supervisors.

A student automatically forfeits his or her award under the following conditions: failure to maintain the required scholastic average for any given scholarship or award; failure to claim the award for any semester; resignation during a semester; or being dropped from the rolls of LSUE. LSU Eunice students who are not currently recipients of scholarships and have accumulated a 3.0 or better GPA are encouraged to apply for any vacancies that may exist among the several scholarships. LSU Eunice students applying for scholarships must complete the online scholarship application. For more information, contact the Office of Enrollment Management, Room 117 of the Acadian Center, phone 1-888-FOR-LSUE, ext. 208, or locally 550-1208.

LSU Eunice students must be enrolled in an associate of applied sciences program or certificate program to qualify for this award. The award covers tuition costs for a maximum of 4 semesters.

To apply for any of the TOPS awards, students should submit the version of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that corresponds to the year they plan to enroll in college. For example, students should submit the 2014-2015 version for school year 2014-2015. The state deadline is published in FAFSA (https://fafsa.ed.gov/). There are no income limits on who may qualify. Students must accept the TOPS award as a first-time freshman by the first semester following the first anniversary of their high school graduation. TOPS awards exempt students from paying tuition. The exemption does not, however, cover all of a student’s assessed fees. LSU Eunice students who receive TOPS are also eligible to receive LSU Eunice scholarships, which, since TOPS covers tuition, become cash awards. The TOPS program requires that students be enrolled full-time in at least 12 semester hours during regular semesters and complete at least 24 credit hours each academic year. TOPS also sets minimum grade averages that students must maintain in college. A student who transfers to another Louisiana university can continue to receive the scholarship. For assistance with TOPS awards, eligibility, or regulations, contact the LSU Eunice Office of Enrollment Management. The program is administered by the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance, P.O. Box 91202, Baton Rouge, LA 70821-9202, 1-800-259-5626, ext. 1012; http://www.osfa.la.gov.

Additional regulations not included in this catalog govern the administration of the TOPS program. All state scholarships are subject to availability of funds. Provisions governing awarding of scholarships may be amended by legislative action. For the latest information on TOPS, contact the offices listed in the preceding paragraph.

The American opportunity tax credit (AOTC) is a credit for qualified education expenses paid for an eligible student for the first four years of higher education. You can get a maximum annual credit of $2,500 per eligible student. If the credit brings the amount of tax you owe to zero, you can have 40 percent of any remaining amount of the credit (up to $1,000) refunded to you.

The amount of the credit is 100 percent of the first $2,000 of qualified education expenses you paid for each eligible student and 25 percent of the next $2,000 of qualified education expenses you paid for that student. But, if the credit pays your tax down to zero, you can have 40 percent of the remaining amount of the credit (up to $1,000) refunded to you.

To be eligible for AOTC, the student must:

  • Be pursuing a degree or other recognized education credential
  • Be enrolled at least half time for at least one academic period* beginning in the tax year
  • Not have finished the first four years of higher education at the beginning of the tax year
  • Not have claimed the AOTC or the former Hope credit for more than four tax years
  • Not have a felony drug conviction at the end of the tax year

*Academic Period can be semesters, trimesters, quarters or any other period of study such as a summer school session. The schools determine the academic periods. For schools that use clock or credit hours and do not have academic terms, the payment period may be treated as an academic period.

Lifetime Learning Credit

The Lifetime Learning Credit is a tax credit for any person who takes college classes. It provides a tax credit of 20% of tuition expenses, with a maximum of $2,000 in tax credits on the first $10,000 of college tuition expenses. You can claim the Lifetime Learning Credit on your tax return if you, your spouse, or your dependents are enrolled at an eligible educational institution and you were responsible for paying college expenses.

Unlike the American Opportunity credit, you need not be in the first four years of undergraduate classes. Even if you took only one class, you may take advantage of the Lifetime Learning Credit.

Eligible Educational Institutions
All accredited colleges and universities are eligible educational institutions. Additionally, vocational schools and other post-secondary institutions are also eligible. Basically, if the institution is eligible to participate in federal student aid programs through the US Department of Education, then you may use tuition paid to the school for claiming the Lifetime Learning tax credit.

Qualifying Expenses
Qualifying expenses include amounts paid for tuition and any required fees (such as registration and student body fees). Qualifying expenses do not include any of the following: books, supplies, equipment, room and board, insurance, student health fees, transportation, or living expenses.

You must be responsible for paying the college tuition and fees. You also need reduce your qualifying expenses when figuring your tax credit by the amount of financial assistance received from grants, scholarships, or reimbursements from your employer. You do not need to reduce your qualifying expenses, however, if you paid for college tuition using borrowed funds, including student loans, or by using gifts from family members.
